Burnley loanee Vokes delighted to get off the mark

STRIKER Sam Vokes was thrilled to get up and running with his first goal for Burnley.

Vokes is on loan from Wolves until the middle of January, and in his fourth appearance he scored the opener in the 4-0 win over Ipswich.

He said: “It was a good night all round and to get my first goal on my first start was fantastic.

“It’s fantastic for me to get my first goal for Burnley, especially in front of the home crowd.

“It was a massive objective of mine when I came on loan – not just to play games but as a striker to score goals. If I can chip in with a few more to the team that would be great.”

Back to back wins have put a healthier complaxion on the league table, and Vokes added: “Saturday was a massive turning point for us.

“At half past four when we were 2-0 down at Hull it was all looking doom and gloom but to turn the game around there was a massive confidence boost for the boys on and off the field and I think that showed on Tuesday night.

“That last minute goal at Birmingham last Tuesday was hard to take but I don’t think the boys could have bounced back any better with six points in the last two games. It’s massive.

“Looking at the table now we’re nearly in the top half.”

Boss Eddie Howe was equally pleased on his birthday: “It was a really good night. The second half was enjoyable - I don’t think I’ve had many second halves here in my short reign as enjoyable as that.

“It was a strange game in that we created so many chances and could have scored twice as many.”

Burnley also earned a first home clean sheet of the season, and Howe added: “It wasn’t just the clean sheet, it was the manner of it, we kept a good side, albeit on a disappointing run, very quiet and I don’t think Granty had a save to make.

“That pleases me more than anything. I think we’ve deserved that because the last three games we’ve defended well in the main.

“But everyone performed from back to front.

“I was delighted with them.

“We know we’re not the finished article and there’s more to come, and we’ll strive to do better.”
