Kacaniklic, on loan from Premier League side Fulham until the end of the season, played the full 90 minutes for Sweden as they were held 0-0 at home by the Republic of Ireland.

The youngster, earning his sixth cap for his country, was named man of the match.

Edgar picked up his 16th cap for Canada in a friendly against Japan in Qatar.

He started the game, before being taken off with just four minutes remaining of the 2-1 defeat.

Canada took on Belarus yesterday in another friendly, again in Qatar.

Elswewhere, Danny Lafferty and Martin Paterson were with the Northern Ireland squad ahead of their World Cup qualifier with Fabio Capello’s Russia at Windsor Park, but the game was postponed on Friday, and a second attempt to play the game on Saturday suffered the same fate, due to heavy snow in Belfast.

The game is now likely to be played in June.

Northern Ireland are scheduled to host Israel tonight.

Striker Sam Vokes was on the bench as Wales again came from behind to beat Scotland 2-1, this time at Hampden Park.

Vokes will hope to add to his 25 Wales caps tonight as Chris Coleman’s side face Croatia in Swansea.

Another unused substitute was winger Dane Richards, back in Jamaica for their 1-1 draw against Panama.

Jamaica are in Costa Rica tonight for another Concacaf World Cup qualifier.

Clarets boss Sean Dyche may look to send Richards out on loan ahead of Thursday’s deadline to get acclimatised to English football.

Richards - signed on a pre-contract agreement by Eddie Howe, only to never work together after Howe’s return to Bournemouth - has made only two appearances.

He came on in the FA Cup defeat at Barnsley, but, after coming off the bench against Huddersfield Town, he suffered the ignominy of being replaced himself.

Dyche said last week: “Dane’s an interesting one. We didn’t know anything about him when he came in. I didn’t even know he was coming in until after I got here.

“We tried to get him up to speed but it took time.

“We gave him a look at it in a game and I didn’t think he was ready, so he came away from it.

“He has trained hard and worked hard.

“I do think the wide players have been the most changed players. I just don’t think he is as ready as the others.”

Asked about a potential loan deal, he added: “Possibly. The Championship is an unforgiving league at times and its a tough one to just step into and do well immediately.”
