Burnley keeper Stewart makes loan move to Alfreton Town

Clarets’ goalkeeper Jon Stewart has joined Blue Square Premier side Alfreton Town on loan until the end of the season.

Stewart makes the switch to the Impact Arena for the chance of competitive first-team football with the Derbyshire club embroiled in a battle to avoid relegation.

The former Bournemouth keeper signed for Burnley last summer but is yet to make a senior appearance for the Clarets.

Stewart acted as cover for Lee Grant and sat on the bench for a near four-month spell earlier this season while Brian Jensen was injured.

But with Jensen back on duty since mid-January and Stewart having recovered from a back injury of his own, the 22-year-old now gets the opportunity to widen his experience at Conference level for a second time following a short spell with Weymouth in 2007/08.

Stewart, who impressed in the Reserves’ 1-1 draw with Wrexham on Tuesday night, is likely to make his debut for Alfreton, managed by ex-Chesterfield and Bradford boss Nicky Law, against Telford United on Saturday.
