Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope to earn fifth England cap at Wembley in World Cup qualifier
With recognised number one Jordan Pickford ruled out after suffering an “injury to his oblique abdominal muscle” diving to try and save a shot from Johann Berg Gudmundsson in the Clarets 2-1 win at Goodison Park last Saturday evening, Pope has got the nod to take over the jersey, ahead of Manchester United’s Dean Henderson and West Brom’s Sam Johnstone, who is in the squad for he first time.
Pope has started games in the last two international get togethers – friendly games against Wales in October and Republic of Ireland in November, playing just one competitive game to date in a Euro 2020 qualifier in Kosovo in November 2019.
