Tom Cooper's battle with nasopharyngeal carcinoma touched the hearts of people across Burnley and beyond. He bravely fought the illness, marrying his sweetheart Tammy in an emotional ceremony at Towneley Hall in 2012. Yesterday Tammy announced via the couple's blog that Tom had died, just two days before Christmas.

She said: "It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I post tonight. I have attempted to post a few times throughout the day - it is incredibly difficult as I am devastated.

"Tom passed away suddenly this morning and although I knew it was imminent, I did not expect it to happen just yet and hoped to spend Christmas Day together as a family.

"Tom was my husband, my best friend, my world. He was a beautiful man, kind, genuine, with a good heart. He had an infectious smile and would light up any room that he entered. Everyone who knew Tom, knows what a unique guy he was. This may sound cliche but he truly was a good person.

"I feel sad for Tom that his life has ended so young because he loved life and he doted on his girls. I do take great comfort in knowing that he is no longer suffering. Tom and I shared some of the best moments of my life.

"Myself, I feel empty and lost right now but thankful I have family to lean on. As well as a special family - you have all shown love and care towards my family in good and bad times.

"All of you supporters in one way or another have helped me and the girls to create precious memories with Tom that we will cherish forever.

I would like to express my absolute gratitude to every single person who has offered help and support and words of encouragement throughout Toms battle.

"He fought so hard, right to the very end, showing bravery, courage and true grit and I can honestly say that I am extremely proud to be his wife.

"We will all miss him terribly but he will be forever in our hearts.

"I would also like to say a huge thank you to both Tom's Macmillan nurse and the hospice who have been nothing short of amazing."
