Burnley boss left disappointed with result and performance

Goals from Ben Mee and Danny Ings put the Clarets in control, but Dwight Gayle pulled one back, before Jason Puncheon equalised after the break.

Puncheon then played in Gayle to snatch a late winner, and Dyche said: “I think the two were combined, the result and the performance, I didn’t really feel comfortable even with a 2-0 lead because of the way we were performing, if I’m honest.

“We didn’t start particularly well, and, unusually for us, looked slightly off with the details that we do well.

“If you don’t do them well enough, you will get hurt.

“It’s probably a bit harsh on us to lose the game, but they’ve done well enough to win it.

“We’ve done that to other teams and sometimes that’s the way you win games.”

Three days after seeing a 2-0 lead turn into a 4-2 FA Cup defeat at Spurs, Dyche added: “it’s two different sides so I’m not overthinking that, but the players are disappointed.

“We have arguably one of the most honest groups, certainly I’ve known, and they know when they’ve performed well and when they’re not quite.

“I said to them afterwards, when you come 1% off your performance levels at this level, you’re not guaranteed anything.

“We were just off, and just off is too far for us at this level.

“But Palace are a year wiser, they have a new manager - we knew all about that, players can look different to what they did a week ago under a new manager, and it was important we were ready for that.

“The preparation was good, I have no doubts about that, physically they will have gone hard again, but the details of our game were not there, the bravery in our football, the technical bravery to use the ball, all that adds up.

“We had too many wrong.”

Burnley could have gone 12th with a win, but as it was, Palace took that spot, becoming only the third side in the bottom half of the table to beat the Clarets.

Dyche treats every game the same, regardless of which end of the table teams are at: “I don’t overthink that, I look at it week by week, we reflect, we move forwards.

“People can look at the table, I didn’t look at it last year when we were top, it’s all defined by the last game of the season.”

Burnley named the same starting line-up for the eighth-successive league game, but Dyche countered claims of fatigue: “No, there were changes in the week, so you can’t really use that.

“Sometimes it just is what it is, it’s the hardest thing to define in management, the performance level has been very good, tactically, technically, so sometimes it’s a head scratcher.

“We’ll work it out and speak to the players next week to be ready to go again.

“There’s only been two what I would call below par performances this season, so in the bigger picture, I’m not going to overthink it, people thought we’d need snookers by now.

“We’re still in good shape, just disappointed.”
