Burnley boss heaps praise on dynamic duo

Leading scorer Ings entered double figures for the term while team-mate Vokes added his fifth and sixth in the 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic at Turf Moor as the Clarets climbed back to second in the table.

The duo, who currently form the division’s most prolific attack, have certainly grabbed the mantel with both hands following the summer departures of Charlie Austin and Martin Paterson who netted 36 times between them in all competitions last term.

“They’ve been very good,” said Dyche. “I made it clear when we lost Charlie that it’s a great opportunity for those two to become their own version of that and they’re doing that at the moment. They’re making a good name for their selves and they’re delivering good performances.”

Vokes has endured a peripatetic career in football since developing as a trainee at Bournemouth. After signing a deal at Molineux with Wolves, the Welshman was moved out on loan to six different clubs – including the Clarets. Now Dyche feels he is getting the best out of the settled marksman.

“It was great for Sam to get two because he thoroughly deserves it,” Dyche said. “I’ve mentioned that Ingsy keeps taking the accolades for the right reasons because he’s doing very well and enjoying his football. Vokesy has done very well for us as well. I spoke to him in the summer about that and he’s certainly grasping the mantel.”

Dyche added: “I’m not surprised because I’ve got faith in my players. I think they are still works in progress. Vokesy made it clear last year after I had a chat with him that he wanted to find a home. He was going out on loan a lot and he was always nearly there. I told him that there was no reason he couldn’t move from nearly to being the real thing.

“I make that clear to all players; that it’s in their grasp. We’ve just got to guide and align them. Sam’s now playing in a manner now that he truly believes what he’s about and what he can achieve. We work with them all as individuals and then mould them in to a team.

Players have their own thoughts on top of what we offer them. Inner belief is important in my opinion and if there’s a bit of a flame you can ignite it. Then it’s up to them to see how far it takes them.”

However, regardless of his side’s success to date, Dyche is continuing to monitor the market in a bid to bolster his squad. While Dyche has been consistent with his starting XI, the Clarets boss is keen to add to cover injuries and suspensions – highlighted by Dean Marney’s absence tonight after the midfielder picked up his fifth yellow of the campaign against the Addicks.

“Suspensions are part and parcel of football,” he said. “It’s not a down side, it’s a chance for somebody else to come in and deliver a performance.

“We’ve been looking and it’s an on-going process. We don’t take anything for granted. We’re looking to add to the group where we can and where the finance will allow us. The strike force we’ve got – that’s probably what everyone knows about but everyone else is looking and trying to get players in.

“We have certain guidelines financially that we have to work with as well. It’s not an easy process but it’s one that over time we feel we can find someone who is right for the group.
