Burnley boss hails strong mentailty as Burnley fight back to win

Burnley trailed to a goal from the Championship’s leading scorer, Leeds’ Ross McCormack, but without injured top scorer Danny Ings, recovered to win with an own goal from Jason Pearce and Scott Arfield’s seventh of the season.

It was a first double over Leeds since 1926/27 and extended Burnley’s unbeaten home league record to 22 games.

A 14th league game without defeat also extended the gap between Derby, in third, and the Clarets! to 10 points, and Dyche said: “It was an interesting game, the challenge is there for all to see for Leeds, they’ve had a couple of awkward results but I know their staff well and warned the players they would be up for it and they would have to be ready, and I think they were.

“We just gave a soft goal away, and that can happen, but once again, there was that relentless mentality.

“I didn’t have so much quality as a player, but I had a relentless mentality, and I believe in it.

“I said to the lads ‘you can believe anything, go for anything, keep going forward, and against some beliefs last season, I believe in attacking, I never believe in just defending.

“I thought that was clear again.”

After recovering from a goal down to win at Blackburn last Sunday, it was the third time this season Burnley had conceded the first goal and gone on to win, and Dyche added: “Yet again it shows the desire, the passion for what they do, that mentality I talk about.

“You have to do it day in, day out, because I’m a great believer you do things right on a daily basis because you don’t then need to flick a switch, when the game comes round, you’re ready.

“We just keep going, never beaten, and I saw that again in a performance that was ok, we can do better, but we still looked a threat and overall I felt we deserved it again.”

Ashley Barnes impressed in his full debut in the absence of Ings, and Dyche feels the squad is greater than any one individual: “It’s a great opportunity for someone else, as you saw. The team has won again and we take great value in the group, which is the key thing.”

Ings was hurt at Birmingham on Wednesday, and the full extent of his injury remains unknown: “It’s upper ankle ligaments, so we’ll get it checked out in more detail this week.

“He’s had a scan and we’ll wait for the opinion.”
