The Clarets slipped to sixth as they were leapfrogged by Reading, who replaced them in third following a third win in four visits to Turf Moor.

The Royals raced into a 2-0 lead within nine minutes.

Nick Blackman was held up on the break by Michael Keane, but Keane’s flicked clearance found Hal Robson-Kanu, who fed Blackman, and the former Blackburn striker drilled past Tom Heaton after five minutes.

And four minites later, an incisive passing move ended in Chris Gunter crossing low for Lucas Piazon to sweep in a second.

The Clarets had 67% of the ball in the first period, but went in at the break having only hadhan Bond, after Sam Vokes flicked on a Heaton goal kick.

Burnley continued to probe after the interval, but it took the introduction of Joey Barton and Chris Long to perk things up.

Vokes had a shot blocked by Michael Hector, but was adamant the on-loan Chelsea man had handled, and moments later, Tendayi Darikwa ghosted in at the back post to volley in his first goal for the club from a Scott Arfield centre.

Darikwa cleared off the line from Robson-Kanu, while Burnley-born Oliver Norwood produced an overhead kick to deny Vokes from a Matt Taylor corner.

Norwood hit the bar with a free kick, as Reading held onto their advantage to claim the points.
