The Clarets trailed to Lewis Dunk's header at the break, but restored parity early in the second half when Johann Berg Gudmundsson beat Robert Sanchez.

The hosts were in command for much of the game and fashioned 20 shots on goal, with seven on target, but couldn't find a winner.

"I didn't think there was too much in the first half, even though we were 1-0 down," said Dyche.

"I thought we had a decent handle on the game, but we just couldn't find that conviction that counts in the final third. We had two or three very good chances.

"I said to them at half-time that I thought the energy and commitment was good, but we just needed a bit more belief in our play in the final third."

He added: "I thought we were outstanding in the second half. I don't want to cry it in because there are other games that you get something from when you don't deserve it, but today was a head-scratcher that we didn't get all three points after a performance like that.

"It was really pleasing and there were so many positive individual performances. Matt Lowton was excellent, our back four in general were very strong and Corky and Westy were considered in their play.

"Johann Berg Gudmundsson looked sharp, Dwight McNeil grew into the game and the two centre forwards were very effective in the second half when linking up. There were some very good performances today so I'm pleased for them."

The home side had opportunities to get their noses in front before the Seagulls went ahead in the 36th minute and they had chance after chance to turn the game on its ahead after the equaliser.

Dwight McNeil's ingenuity from a set-piece was kept out well by Sanchez before James Tarkowski failed to convert from a corner.

Ashley Barnes saw his header chalked off after the break and then Matej Vydra was denied by Brighton's young Spanish stopper when getting in behind from Jack Cork's cushioned pass.

Dyche said: "It's not always about the number of chances that you create, it's the quality of them.

"We had 20 shots today with seven on target, but they were quality chances, and I thought we asked so many questions of them in the second half.

"Even when they changed their shape we just carried on in the same way we had been working.

"I'm very pleased with the performance, though I'm a tiny bit frustrated we didn't get all three points."

He added: "We had both today (quality and quantity). On another day I don't think there would have been too many people disgruntled if it was two or three to us with the amount of quality we had going forward.

"We have to continue with that though because it's one of the things we've questioned this season.

"We've got to continue with that mentality and have that freedom to attack like we had in the second half."
