But with three home games in just over a week - sandwiching a trip to Derby - recalled keeper Brian Jensen feels the Clarets can still put pressure on Leeds United in sixth place.

Burnley are seven points behind Leeds, with a game in hand, and have to travel to Elland Road in their penultimate game.

And while the Clarets have only won twice in their last six home games, their record prior to that was formidable.

After Swansean City tomorrow, Middlesbrough travel to East Lancashire on Tuesday night in Burnley’s game in hand, before Steve Cotterill sits in the away dugout for the first time since leaving the club in November 2007 when Portsmouth are the visitors a week on Monday.

Jensen is not giving up hope while it remains a possibility of reaching the play-offs, and he has urged the home crowd - anxious of late after one point from nine at home- to back the side to the hilt.

His message to the fans is: “Get behind us.

“Swansea are a good side. They will pass the ball but we need to get after them otherwise they’re just going to pass it around us.

“We need them to back us up.

“If we make a mistake, that happens in football. If you try to be positive you will make mistakes, but a goal could come out of it too.

“We’ve always got to be positive.

“We need the fans to get behind us.

“It’s been a little bit up and down for the last couple of weeks, so we need them, definitely.

“We are as frustrated as they are.

“Players say it doesn’t affect you, but if your own fans get on your back it will affect you.

“We need them to get behind us.

“That’s what we need against Swansea and I know they can do it.

“If they get behind us they will see some positives.

“Mathematically it’s still possible and we are not going to lie down. If we get a good result against Swansea, we’ve still got a game in hand and it’s still possible.”

Despite defeat at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night, after the harsh sending off of Marvin Bartley after 32 minutes, the performance was a vast improvement on Saturday’s 4-0 reversal at Leicester.

And Jensen said: “Compared to last week there was plenty of fight. We talked about it and said that wasn’t going to happen again.

“We’ve always known that we can do it, it’s just a blip.

“You always have two or three results like that a season, and Saturday was one of them.

“It’s gone.

“Tuesday was unfortunate but we got so many positives out of it.

“With 11 men on the pitch on Saturday we’ve got a chance against anybody.”

He added: “Going down to 10 men that early in the game is always going to give you a mountain to climb but I thought we did really, really well.

“We were surprised that they still stood off us and we had time to play the ball around.

“I thought it had 0-0 written all over it, but unfortunately two scruffy goals won it for them.

“There’s nothing you could do about it.

“They needed the luck and they had it and we didn’t.

“But I think there were so many positive things to come out of Tuesday.”
