Boyd, a club record-equalling £3m signing from Hull City on transfer deadline day, scored his first Clarets goal on the hour - after two quickfire Hammers goals after the restart.

But the visitors killed the game with a third shortly after, meaning Burnley were left to rue missed chances in a first half where they were dominant.

It leaves the Clarets as the only Premier League side without a win so far this season, but Boyd still believes: “There were loads of positives. We played some fantastic stuff first half, and even in the second half we created chances.

“It was just a 10-minute spell we need to learn from so there are lots of positives to build on for next Sunday against Everton.

“It’s devastating we lost because of the way we played, but at this level you are going to get punished for a lapse in concentration.

“At this level you can’t afford to make too many mistakes and we will learn from it.

“If we had gone 1-0 up, we could have scored two or three and the confidence would have been through the roof, so we will keep believing.

“There is no doubt it’s going to come and two out of the next three are at home as well so it’s a great chance to get our first win.”

Boyd was delighted to get off the mark, scoring only Burnley’s fourth goal of the season, and he feels there are goals in the side: “I need to chip in with as many goals as I can.

“The amount of chances we created in the first half people are going to score goals.

“I have no doubt we will get the goals which will be enough to keep us in the division.

And the Scotland international insists confidence remains high: “It’s disappointing but I don’t think confidence will be knocked because of the positives and the way we played.

“For large parts we dominated them and they will be a top, top team. I’m sure they will be in the top 10 at the end of the season.

“The way we played in the first half we dominated for large spells and the gaffer warned us they would come out with a bit of a response and those two goals at the start of the second half killed the game really.”
