The defender was adjudged to have handled Kamil Grosicki’s corner in the second half which gave Tigers skipper Tom Huddlestone the platform to give the hosts the lead from the spot.

“It was a great finish and a good touch,” said Boyd. “He does that all the time in training and smashes them in.

“I don’t know if he got pushed, but it was handball. But, yeah, he showed great character to come back and score his goal.

“He’s very assured. That confidence of playing a full season and doing well last year too. He played in the Prem two years ago, but he’s playing on a regular basis now. His call-up for England gives him the confidence that he belongs at that level.”

Burnley doubled their tally away from home on Boyd’s return to Humberside, adding to the point secured against Jose Mourinho’s men at Old Trafford in October.

And it was the perfect remedy following the club’s FA Cup exit at the hands of non-league Lincoln City at Turf Moor.

“Yeah, it was forgotten straight away,” he said. “The gaffer made sure first thing when we came in on Monday that we were just looking forward to this game. It was nice to be able to forget straight away and get a good point away.

“We were never lacking confidence about going away. It’s a good point for us. It keeps the gap there for us. I think we were solid today. Maybe in the final third, we needed a bit more quality, but we’re happy with the point.

“We’ve got games against teams in and around us and it’s a great opportunity to get our first away win.”
