Boyd first on busy deadline?

With the transfer window closing at 11 p.m., Boyd, 28, is expected for a medical to seal a three or four-year contract, for a deal believed to be a club-record equalling £3m.

Tigets boss Steve Bruce said on Sunday: “We allowed George to go and speak to Burnley. Personally, I wish him well.

“He got the offer of a three or four year contract. He’s got the chance to play and he wants to play.

“I’ve been in the game a long time, and if all the professional footballers were like George Boyd then my job would be easy. We wish him well and it probably looks as though he’s going to Burnley.”

Burnley boss Sean Dyche was hopeful of more business, having brought in seven new faces before Boyd over the summer.

Targets such as Henri Lansbury of Nottingham Forest, Craig Bryson of Derby and Watford’s Troy Deeney all agreed new contracts after interest from Burnley, while Derby centre back Richard Keogh - for whom the club had a £1.5m offer rejected on Friday - is close to agreeing new terms with the Rams.

Burnley continued to be linked with moves for Nathaniel Chalobah of Chelsea, Southampton centre back Jos Hooiveld, James McArthur of Wigan, Watford’s Lewis McGugan and Nick Powell of Manchester United ahead of the deadline, and Dyche, asked if he was hopeful of getting deals done, said, merely: “I’m extremely hopeful.”

He added, coyly, when pushed on whether there were targets the club were making progress with: “There are!”

Burnley have so far brought in Marvin Sordell, Michael Kightly, Matt Taylor, Matt Gilks, Steven Reid, Lukas Jutkiewicz and Stephen Ward in since sealing promotion to the Premier League.

But the club had endured a difficult transfer window, spending around £4.5m, with only Crystal Palace spending less.

Dyche mused: “The market has moved forward.

“We’ve got some money for the first time in a long time, and yet the market has jumped forward to a level where it’s very difficult.

“We’ve been first in, first out to a number of situations which we thought were ones that we could progress, but they haven’t done.

“I must make it clear that I really like the group that you’ve seen today (against Manchester United),

“I really like the way they work and the way they operate, but we do want strength in depth, we want to improve that strength in depth and we want people who can challenge to move us even further forward.”
