The summer signing started the first three Premier League games, before picking up an Achilles problem at the start of September, which required surgery and has kept him out ever since.

However, he was back on the bench for the 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal on Saturday, coming on in the dying moments, and Dyche said: “Matty is getting there, getting fitter and stronger and he might play a part as the games tick on.

“He has done before, so let’s hope he’s fit enough to do so and affect the team in a positive manner when and if required.”

Asked if the former West Ham man – who has never been relegated from the Premier League – could play a big role in the last six games, Dyche added: “I don’t think I can guarantee a big role on the pitch.

“You can never guarantee that, never mind who you sign.

“I think I had the idea of the lads having an experienced person around the group.

“I think that is important. The group is gaining experience, naturally, now.

“We are a long way down the line of playing in the Premier League. I think some have benefitted from that.

“But its helpful if you have been round it before.”

Meanwhile, Dyche is hopeful of adding Ross Wallace, Steven Reid and Marvin Sordell to his squad for the trip to Everton on Saturday.

All three missed out on Saturday after recent niggles, and Dyche explained: “Ross and Reidy had only trained for one day, Marvin the same – he has had a minor knee injury.

“We didn’t want to risk players with these six important games to come.

“We need a fully fit squad.”
