Bolton move looms large for Wembley hero Wade Elliott

A YEAR on from his Wembley winner, Wade Elliott continues to move towards the Turf Moor exit door.

As reported two weeks ago, former Clarets boss Owen Coyle is expected to return to the club to take Elliott to the Reebok Stadium.

The 31-year-old is moving into the last year of his contract, after five years with Burnley, following a free transfer move from Bournemouth.

The switch is likely to be one of the first to go through over the close season, although speculation continues to link Steven Fletcher with a move back to the Premier League.

There have been no offers yet for the 12-goal striker, although West Ham are thought to have entered the chase, rivalling Birmingham, Wolves and Bolton for his signature.

But as Elliott increasingly looks set to leave following relegation, Robbie Blake continues to ponder whether to accept the offer of a new contract.

Blake’s current deal is due to expire this summer, with Championship rivals Preston and SPL side Hearts keen on the 34-year-old.

It is thought that only Rangers or Celtic could tempt him to move north of the border, however, and Preston’s precarious financial position means they are unlikely to be able to match his terms.

Blake is expected to have to give Burnley an answer one way or another this week, and it remains to be seen whether he will stay at the club.

His thoughts have been dominated over the last few days by his new-born son, who has been ill and was released from hospital on Friday.

Blake had said, before the end of the season, that he was set for a new challenge, having started only four 18 games after Brian Laws replaced Coyle in January.

But Laws was quick to reassure him he will play a pivotal role next season.

Meanwhile, rumoured Clarets target Maik Taylor has agreed to stay at Birmingham City.

The 38-year-old was believed to be interesting boss Brian Laws, with the Northern Ireland international’s previous contract set to expire this summer.

But the former Fulham keeper has agreed to stay at St Andrews to keep new £6m signing Ben Foster on his toes.

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish envisages Taylor moving into the coaching side of the game at the club, and feels he will benefit England international Foster after his move from Manchester United.

McLeish said: “Maik has accepted a new deal. I can see him becoming a future coach.

“He is nearing the age of 40, but like David James he is in superb condition.

“I need Maik to drive Ben and he still has the hunger.

“I’m sure that he’ll still be in Northern Ireland’s thoughts, which will keep him on his toes.”
