Bittersweet day for Dyche

The Clarets beat Hull City 1-0 with Danny Ings’ 10th goal of the season, ending a 10-game scoring drought for the player, and a club record 631 minutes without finding the net.

However, it wasn’t enough to stave off the drop due to wins for Sunderland, Leicester and Aston Villa, and a Newcastle draw.

Dyche was asked about his desire to stay at Burnley and try and bounce back, but that waste last thing on his mind: “There’s a desire to get through today, go back home, see my family and make sense of everything.

“We’ll see, that’s another day’s story, I was asked about it a few weeks ago, for the moment, my thoughts are for the players...there’ll be a time to think about the bigger picture, I’m reflecting on the immediate gut feeling, and that is you want to work hard, be progressive, and the players as well, wherever that takes you, who knows, but I’m Burnley Football Club manager and that’s all I’m thinking about, I’m thinking about the people involved at this moment in time.”

And he was proud of his players, who he feels have given their all in a challenging season: “The mentality was strong again to go and win a game against the thoughts of most, and that’s been good all season, but obviously there’s a bigger picture disappointment because we all wholeheartedly believed in what we were trying to achieve this season, and unfortunately it’s gone away from us.

“It’s a strange one, there’s balance to that because of the bigger picture of where we were two and a half years ago, but that’s for reflection, and at the moment it’s a feeling of disappointment.”

He added: “I’ve taken great pride in the players’ mentality because when you’re constantly written off, every week, every game, and after game 10, it’s ‘you’ve got no chance’, the mentality of the players, and the focus they’ve had to take games on everywhere, I’ve absolutely been proud of that.

“We’ve been to some of the super powers and delivered big performances, got points - not as many wins as we’d have liked, but overall, I can’t tell you how proud I am of the players.

“It’s been a big task and a big ask.

“The fans have been absolutely amazing as well, they’ve supported us every bit of the way and it sure they will for the last two games as well.”
