Bamford certain goals will come

The Chelsea striker, who joined the Clarets in the summer on a temporary deal until the end of the season, hasn’t scored in 13 outings in the top flight but believes that will change once he’s given the opportunity.

The 23-year-old has only made two starts at this level when given the nod by Norwich City boss Alex Neil in games against Manchester City and West Brom last term. That came after a frustrating spell with Crystal Palace where he eventually terminated his time at Selhurst Park.

Bamford, who scored for Middlesbrough in Capital One Cup ties against Liverpool and Manchester City, said: “It would be massive to score. Wherever I’ve been before once I get one goal there’s normally a few that follow. Once I hit the net once I’ll get on a roll again.

“I’ve scored against Premier League opposition before and I scored against Sunderland when I was younger so it’s not something that’s foreign to me. It’s all about getting a chance.

“Last year I didn’t get much of an opportunity and it was a really frustrating year even though I learnt a lot from it. This year is about building on that and hopefully pushing on to scoring some goals.”

Asked if he’s feeling any pressure, Bamford added: “With the way that the manager likes it here at Burnley it’s different to what I’ve had before so it took me a few weeks to get used to it.

“I think he’s been happy with me in the last couple of weeks because I’ve been doing well in training. Now I’ve just got to keep it up and be consistent. Hopefully now I’ll get more game time.

“If you’re starting every week and you’re struggling then it becomes a bit of pressure but when you’re coming on as a sub it’s just anything you can get really is a bonus.

“At the minute it would help a lot but I’ve not got loads of pressure on me at the minute until I’m starting games.”

Meanwhile, Bamford insists that the weight of expectation is on United’s shoulders ahead of tomorrow’s clash at Old Trafford.

The former England under 21 international says that Sean Dyche’s side will go in to the fixture full of confidence on the back of their dramatic win over Everton while the hosts will have a point to prove after being crushed by his parent club at Stamford Bridge.

“It’s a big game and I’ve never played there,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a good chance to express ourselves and show what we’re about.

“There’s no pressure on us, I think all the pressure is on them with the way things have been going. It’s a good chance for us to give a good account of ourselves.

“It’s a massive stadium with a lot of history behind it. Everything associated with Manchester United as a club, paired with the fact that they’ve now got Jose Mourinho at the helm, makes it an exciting day.”

He added: “I think we always believe in ourselves among the players. In the dressing room we always believe that we can at least nick a point out of a game. There’s no point going in to a game without the belief that you can win.

“We always have that mentality, sometimes we don’t quite get there like against Southampton who were the better team on the day.

“With the way Manchester United have been going recently they’ve got a point to prove as well. It will be a tough game but we fully believe in ourselves.

“The Turf has become a bit of a fortress and you can see the freedom that we play with. It’s all about getting that in to our away games and once we do that we can pick up more points.”
