The England Under-21 international, once a target for former Turf Moor boss Eddie Howe, had fallen behind Diego Lugano, Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley at the Hawthornes but enjoyed an end-of-season renaissance under Pepe Mel, culminating the season with 15 appearances in all competitions.

The 24-year-old, signed from Rochdale in 2010, faced the Clarets in February last year in a 2-1 win on his debut for Bolton Wanderers during a loan spell at the Reebok Stadium.
