Austin was in Hull for a medical, after a fee was agreed over the weekend, with the Tigers expected to unveil the frontman, who turned 24 on Friday, this afternoon.

It brings an end to Hull’s prolonged chase of the former Swindon Town man, with the Clarets accepting less than their £7m valuation as he enters the final year of his contract.

Burnley had made a late bid to get him to sign a new contract, with joint-chairman John Banaszkiewicz saying last week: “We’re trying our best to keep him and have offered him a very good contract - we’ve tried to see the best deal the club can offer him. It might not be enough to keep him, but we’ll see.”

But the offer came too late in the day for Austin, who was Eddie Howe’s first signing, costing £1.2m in January 2011 from Swindon.

Hull had started the bidding with an offer less than £4m, but they have managed to tempt Burnley with their final offer of £4.5m, with the Clarets deciding to accept, rather than risk him leaving for nothing next summer.

Swindon have a 15% sell-on clause on Austin, who hit 45 goals in 90 games for Burnley.
