Austin return no distraction for Burnley boss

BACK IN TOWN: Former Clarets striker Charlie Austin with Sean Dyche

Austin comes back to Turf Moor for the first time since his switch to Loftus Road in the summer.

But with a squad laden with Premier League quality, Dyche admits ahead of the Championship’s game of the day: “There’s more to QPR than Charlie Austin - just look at the bench! We can’t just concentrate on him.

“He was a good servant to the club, and deserved his move, and he’s scoring goals at QPR now. We wish him well, but obviously not tomorrow!”

Dyche came into the club a year ago, aware Austin had 18 months left on his contract, and that it would be hard to keep hold of him, but he accepted the financial necessity to sell: “I think it’s well documented, we knew in the position we’re in, we have to make sure finances are coming into the club, other than people putting their hand in their pockets.

“The reality of this club is not that we want to sell, but we felt the time and fee were appropriate, with him having a year left on his contract.”

Dyche backed Danny Ings and Sam Vokes to take on the responsibility for goals, and he added: “I had belief in all the players, not just Danny and Sam.

“We enjoy working with players, we don’t question them too much, it’s a tough profession and we like to work with them and develop them.

“We just promote that.”

Meanwhile, Dyche is just getting on with business ahead of the game, not placing any extra importance on it: “It’s a big challenge, QPR are market leaders in terms of finances and squad size, and have an excellent, experienced manager.

“Money helps, but it’s not the be all and end all, we’re not the ‘have nots’ - maybe if you compare us financially - they have a very deep squad, took Charlie among others, Matt Phillips for a large fee, the lad Onyewu this week - but when the game comes, that goes out of the window.

“But we’ve been ready for all the challenges so far this season. I make it clear how we feel - it’s just another three points, that’s how we go about it. I value every game, not just games like this.”
