AUDIO: We wanted to win for Eddie - Jason Tindall

ASSISTANT boss Jason Tindall admitted it was a difficult afternoon, trying to carry on as normal after Eddie Howe’s mother Annie passed away overnight.

Tindall took the side in the absence of Howe, and was disappointed not to get a win against Crystal Palace to dedicate to Annie’s memory.

Burnley were ahead within two minutes, as Jay Rodriguez slammed home a penalty after Martin Paterson was brought down by Jonathan Parr, but Darren Ambrose levelled from the spot after the break, after Kieran Trippier clipped Wilfried Zaha, who was later dismissed for kicking out at David Edgar.

Tindall said: “It was a tough day obviously for everybody, none more so than Eddie himself.

“Eddie had some devastating news regarding his mum, who sadly passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning.

“That meant he obviously wasn’t here, but he was in the right place by her bedside when she did pass away, and our hearts go out to him and the family.

“We are just disappointed that we didn’t get the win, for ourselves, but more importantly for Eddie.

“He’s been in the odd day this week because that’s Eddie. He has a great drive and he was determined to be in every single day.

“But sometimes you have to put things into perspective and your family comes first.

“Given the circumstances that he faced, he was where he should have been, with his family at a time when they needed him, and when he had to be there.

“We are all just devastated at the news and just so, so disappointed that we couldn’t get the three points for him and his family.”

Burnley had the chance to go ahead when Paterson won a spot-kick after only 44 seconds, which Rodriguez duly took to claim his 21st goal of the season, but the Clarets couldn’t build on their early dominance. “We got off to a great start and for the first 25 minutes I thought we were good and a bit unfortunate not to extend our lead,” said Tindall.

“After that they got a little bit of a foothold in the game and it was a pretty even contest.

“You can blame good defending, good goalkeeping or not so good finishing.

“We’d have liked to have created a lot more opportunities, it’s just unfortunate we didn’t take the ones we did create.”

Tindall felt Palace’s penalty was a cheap award, with Zaha needing little encouragement to go to ground: “It was soft. I didn’t have any kind of a view of it at the time. My first impression was that it wasn’t a penalty, and having seen it a number of times on the DVD it certainly wasn’t a penalty.

“We’re disappointed with that, but the referee’s made that decision and we can’t do anything about it.

“We’re still disappointed that we haven’t won the game.”
