The Tractor Boys silenced Turf Moor, after goals from captain David Norris and Connor Wickham had given Town a two-goal advantage at the interval.

“I thought first half we played really well and put them on the back foot,” Jewell said.

But after sitting back on their lead in the second half, a 68th minute Jay Rodriguez strike halved the deficit, and enabled the Clarets to apply the pressure.

He added: “I’ve got to be brutally honest and say I was disappointed with the way we played in the second half. I thought we sat back too much.

“But, having said that, I don’t remember our goalie having to make too many saves.”

Jimmy Bullard’s corner in the 17th minute was headed into the path of Norris by defender Gareth McAuley, and the skipper fired low past Lee Grant from 12 yards.

Norris then turned provider seven minutes later, as he latched on to Jason Scotland’s defence-splitting pass, before clipping a cross towards England Under-21 international Wickham, whose header into the ground looped over a helpless Grant.

Jewell said: “The first goal was decent set-play and the second was a terrific move. Connor’s made hard work of scoring that goal! I thought every time we went forward we looked like scoring. We made them change their system and shape.

“They played long balls and we dealt with it comfortably.

“I thought we could have done better with the ball in the second half, but fair play to the players. It was a stirling performance defensively.”
