The Scotsman believes the signing is a signal of intent from the club, adding to the quality already among the ranks at Turf Moor.

Tarkowski, who joins up with former Bees team-mate Andre Gray, featured 61 times for the Griffin Park outfit and contributed to 14 clean sheets.

He also helped the club reach the Championship play-offs last season where they were beaten by Boro over two legs.

“It’s a great signing,” said Arfield. “It’s great news. He’s a good player, a really good player. I played against him in League One when he was at Oldham and I was at Huddersfield. He’s a top player. We’ve got strength in depth everywhere now.

“The more the merrier. It’s a great signing. We’ve got a lot of strength here. There’s always going to be a few that the manager is trying to get that weren’t going to happen. Things take there time and it makes it more exciting. It’s a bit of drama.”
