Arfield hoping to impress Scotland boss Strachan

But the 24-year-old admits he faces stiff competition to break into the squad.

Arfield scored Burnley’s winner at Ispwich Town on Saturday, his fourth goal in 15 appearances for the Clarets, since arriving on a free transfer in the summer.

He has played for Scotland at Under 19, 21 and B level, but has yet to get the call for the senior side.

Scoring goals and delivering performances at the top of the Championship will surely help his aim, although the midfield area is congested, with the likes of James Morrison, Steven Naismith, Craig Bryson, Barry Bannan, Robert Snodgrass, Ikechi Anya, Charlie Adam and Scott Brown all in the mix.

Arfield said: “It definitely is an ambition and something I want to fulfil.

“I think there are five or six players in the Championship that play in the squad and midfield so it’s going to be hard to get in.

“But if I keep doing what I’m doing, if it happens, it happens, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.

“Hopefully he’s watching but if he’s not it’s not the be all and end all.

“I’d be absolutely delighted though!”

Arfield, meanwhile, looked back on the win at Portman Road which gave the Clarets a two-point lead ahead of Saturday’s visit of QPR: “I think one goal was always going to win that game and fortunately for us we got it.

“I didn’t need to do too much with Kieran’s (Trippier) ability at crossing it, you just need to get something on it.

“Thankfully I didn’t get too much on it and it just crept in the bottom corner and I’m delighted with it.

“Headers don’t come too often but that’s two this season.

“I need to savour them!

“But we believe we can win any game, we can go anywhere and win any games. But if you don’t win it it, you don’t lose it at times.

“We turned the heat on for the last 20 minutes and got the win we needed.

“We’re strong all over the pitch, we’ve got a good shape to us and we’ve got great commitment and ability in the dressing room.

“We take every game as it comes.”
