Arfield hopes derby win can be catalyst

In March last year, the Clarets triumphed 2-1 at Ewood Park – a result which helped cement second place in the Championship at a key stage of the season.

Arfield’s winner against Rovers on Saturday took Burnley third in the table, and, while earlier in the season, the Scot feels it can give Sean Dyche’s men a similar lift: “We definitely hope so. It was a fantastic win, and even then I still don’t think we dominated.

“It was probably a 50-50 game and it was going to be a goal like that that would win it, and I’m buzzing that it was myself that got it.”

Burnley face Arfield’s former club Huddersfield Town today at Turf Moor on the back of one defeat in 10 games, and a superb seven points from nine since the international break, and he added: “Fans look at the league table after every game, but it’s Saturday-Tuesday for months and we cannot take any game lightly.

“We approach every game like it’s the most important one.

“That stands us in good stead. It did that two years ago and got us up there. It didn’t really work last season, but once you get a taste for it you want to get back there, but you have to take it game by game.

“It’s a massive month for us, and that’s a seven-point week we’ve got.

“When you look at the Nottingham Forest game, we dominated large periods of that but it took us until the last minute to get the point. But I think we’d done enough to win that game as well so it should have been nine.

“But to get seven points from that week with two tough away games, we’ll take that.”

And Arfield is eagerly anticipating the visit of the Terriers: “That’s another one, on a personal note they’re the ones you want to play in.

“I’m sure the fans will get right behind us, and it’s a massive month for us.

“It’s another one you look forward to, a previous club and you want to kind of prove a point. At the end of the day it’s a game of football like it was today.”

He left Town in the summer of 2013 on a free transfer, but has proved a shrewd signing for Dyche.

Arfield scored nine goals on the way to promotion, and he smiled: “It’s been brilliant for me to be part of this club.

“There have been massive highs at this club since I’ve moved here and long may it continue.”
