Agyei knocking on the door

The 19-year-old, who moved to Turf Moor from AFC Wimbledon in 2015, toasted his recent inclusion in Sean Dyche’s matchday squad with two goals for the club’s under 23s in their eight-goal thriller against Sunderland in the Premier League Cup.

The youngster opened the scoring at Stockport County’s Edgeley Park with a stunning solo goal and added a second, heading home from Dwight O’Neil’s delivery.

Following Burnley’s final game in the competition, having failed to finish in Group B’s qualification spots, he said: “It was good. The ball came to me and I turned and it kind of opened up. I went round a couple of defenders and was through on goal so I had a shot and it went in. I was disappointed not to get a hat-trick, but pleased we won the game.”

Agyei spent three months on loan at the Ricoh Arena earlier in the season, making 12 starts for Coventry in League 1, scoring four goals.

The pacy forward, who also netted with an exquisite strike in the Checkatrade Trophy, admitted he gained vital experience with the Sky Blues: “I learned a lot. There were a few ups and downs. Coventry were struggling a bit so I have seen both sides of football, which I think has really helped.

“It was really good for development and a great experience. I think it helped me to mature as a player and a person. When the fans aren’t too happy You might get a bit of stick and you’ve got to play well and stick through it.”

Agyei was given a taste of life in the first team for the FA Cup fifth round tie against Lincoln City.

He was than handed his first inclusion in the 18-man Premier League squad for the trip to Hull City.

“I think I’m doing quite well, just always trying to knock on the door, whether in training or matches, to try and score goals and work hard and show what I am about.

“Training with the first team is really helping me improve because every day I will be up against Michael Keane, Ben Mee or James Tarkowski, which is really helping me to develop and mature.

“Any opportunity I’ve just got to take.”

On training among Burnley’s striker’s union, Agyei added: “With Andre (Gray) I’ve learned from his running in behind and his movement, which is really good. From Barnesy and Vokesy it’s been the hold-up play. I’m trying to learn from that. They have all been nice to me and helped me with advice.”
