Fabulous turnout for 35th Hameldon Hill Fell Race

A total of 70 juniors and 255 seniors completed the Hameldon Hill Race - the best turn out in around 20 years.

Not since 1996 has there been as many seniors finish, and you have to go back to 1991 to see more juniors compete.

This was the 35th anniverary of the race, and it was won by Richard Burney of Liverpool Harriers in a time of 37 minutes 8 seconds - almost a minute outside the record of 36 minutes 12 seconds set by Rob Hope in 2004.

He was over a minute ahead of second-placed Marc Hartley of City of Stoke. Jimmy Craig of Barlick Fell Runners took third place in 39.37.

In 18th place, Sarah Tipler of Barlick Fell Runners had a magnificent run to finish as first lady in a new record of 43 minutes 16 seconds - beating Amy Green’s 2007 time of 43 minutes 41 seconds.

In the veteran classes, Andy Buttery of Blackburn Harriers was first V40 home, and Andy Stubbs Of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers took the over 45s category.

Michael Toms of Blackburn Harrriers won the over 50’s, Graham Schofield of Horwich over 55’s, and Ken Taylor of Rossendale Harriers was first in the over 60’s.

The first over 70 man was Clayton-le-Moors Harriers president Dave Scott.

The first Under 23 Lady was Shannon Johnson, and in the ladies’ veteran classes, Tara Krzwicki of Charnwood Athletic Club was first V4-0, Debbie Gowans of Accrington Road Runners took the over 45’s award, and Irene Roche of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers took the over 50’s prize.

Lesley Fisher of Burnden was top over 55, Jean Rawlinson of Barlick Fell Runners took first place in the over 60’s and Pam Binns of Lytham took the over 65’s.

Bob Mitchell of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers was one of the original organisers of the race back in 1979, and now, as an over 60, he still managed to finish in 158th place.
