Crucial lessons learned in Italy

BURNLEY wheelchair fencer Suzannah Rockett insists patience is a virtue in the hunt for London 2012 success after an eye-opening trip to Italy for the World Championships.

The 44-year-old admits things didn’t quite go according to plan in Catania last week as she failed to pick up a victory in her foil, epee and team foil events.

But with key lessons learned the former Primrose Hill pupil will be looking to make amends in December with the British National Championships.

“And although the results weren’t there the experience was invaluable as I learnt so much that will set me in good stead to make London next year, said Rockett

“I certainly feel as though the Paralympics are there for me if I work hard enough.

“I find that if you just look at London then that can blur everything else and there are important milestones to take in between now and then that can’t be ignored.

“So it will all be about taking what I have learnt and using it to show what I can do and keep building that way and hope it leads to London.”

With the World Championships offering Rickett qualification points for London 2012, she knows she missed out on a good opportunity.

But with the new World Cup series kicking off in Germany in January, one of four events, Rockett knows she still has time on her side.
