After beating Padiham by 111 runs at the Arbories in the Ribblesdale Cricket League last month, Read returned to their rivals’s patch to claim a 28-run triumph in the Twenty20 competition.

Conor Lowes starred with the bat for the visitors as he smashed 47 of a 144-7 total, before Elliot Lowes (5-15) and Richard Sharples (3-15) combined to extinguish the hosts with the ball.

“It was good to beat Padiham again,” said O’Connor. “Callum wasn’t best pleased. We just showed that we are much stronger than them even though they pushed us a bit.

“Their overseas amateur (Darryl Losper) scored some runs and was in better form but we were too strong for them. We had more depth in our batting and bowling attacks.”

O’Connor added: “It’s a good start to the competition for us. It’s always nice to beat your rivals.

“The professional - Brandon Scullard - is very intelligent and helps out with field settings. It helps having someone to talk to during the match.

“We’ve got Great Harwood up next in the competition now on Friday at home and a win will put us in a great position.”

Meanwhile, O’Connor was on the losing side as the Ribblesdale League lost to the North Lancashire and Cumbria League by 50 runs at Furness Cricket Club.

O’Connor, who watched the rain wash out Read’s clash with champions Clitheroe at Whalley Road on Saturday, captained the Inter-League squad which also included team-mate Joey Marshall.

However, after the hosts clocked up 171-8, with Cherry Tree’s Ruan Sadler taking 2-12 from a seven over spell, the visitors fell short. Settle’s Tom Davidson top-scored for the away side with a knock of 43.

Elsewhere in the Ribblesdale League Senior Division, Euxton’s clash with Cherry Tree was the only fixture to survive the deluge as the hosts won by 18 runs at Balshaw Park.

The inclement weather affected: Baxenden v Brooksbottom, Brinscall v Barnoldswick, Oswaldtwistle Immanuel v Earby, Padiham v Whalley, Ribblesdale Wanderers v Settle and Salesbury v Edenfield.
