Read reach quarter-final stage of LCB Knockout Cup

Read have joined Lancashire League pair Burnley and Lowerhouse in the quarter-finals of the LCB knockout Cup after beating Moorside by a solitary wicket at Whalley Road.

Professional Ravi Jangid limited the visitors in claiming 3-9 from nine overs while Jack Wood added 2-37 from an identical spell with the ball.

That form had the visitors languishing on 76-7 at one stage but Daniel Anchor’s men found a second wind to close on 160-9.

Mohammed Zafran (14), Jangid (21), Ben Gorton (24) and Michael Whalley (16) all batted respectably to reach double figures but at the halfway stage they found themselves in a similar position to their opponents.

However, Thomas Turner fired an unbeaten half-century at number eight and Warren Eastham contributed with an additional 15 at the tail end to edge Read over the line.

“It was a really close game on a much slower wicket than what we’ve been used to,” said skipper Joey Marshall. “We won the toss and chose to put them in and we had them at 70-odd for seven at one point.

“However, with having to field five bowlers in that competition I think we found ourselves a bowler short. We allowed them off the hook a bit and they were able to reach a 160 total.

“It was a competitive score but we felt it was beatable. We started off well but then, like Moorside, we struggled for a patch. We were 81-5 so we were in a similar kind of position.

“Then Thomas Turner has come in at number eight and scored a brilliant 50 not out. He hit really well and we needed that partnership with Warren Eastham at the end. It was close, we won it with one wicket to spare, but it could’ve gone either way.”

Read will now travel to Westhoughton CC in the next round on July 24th.

The victory proved the perfect tonic for Read following a 59-run loss to Settle at the Marshfield Ground.

Wood and Andrew Rushton claimed three wickets apiece while Jangid claimed two scalps but the trio failed to prevent the home side reaching a 192-7 total.

Jangid (40), Whalley (24) and Joe Noone (29 not out) batted well for the visitors but they fell well short of their target.

Meanwhile, Padiham maintained their rich vein of form to really apply the pressure on Section B leaders Barnoldswick as they beat Baxenden by 60 runs at the Arbories.

Michael Letson top scored with 37 for the hosts on his debut for the club as Kurt Robinson’s side made 117.

And he polished that performance with three wickets, conceding just nine runs in four overs, to help seal the win. Professional Brady Barends and Toby Burrows also claimed three wickets apiece.
