O’Connor hopes win is springboard

Read skipper Kyle O’Connor hopes Sunday’s Ribblesdale League 20/20 Cup success is a sign of things to come at Whalley Road.

Read beat hosts Brooksbottom by three wickets in the semi-final, before seeing off Cherry Tree by 60 runs in the final - with a side with an average age of just 21.

Read hadn’t won the competition in the previous 10 years it had been held, and have gone 10 years without winning the league, and 11 without winning the Ramsbottom Cup.

O’Connor, who admitted he woke up with the trophy on Monday morning after the celebrations, said: “It was a really good day, it got a little nervy against Brooksbottom when they had us seven down, and I was biting my nails, but we batted really well against Cherry Tree, workingthe ones.

“Brandon (Scullard) said at the halfway point the first team to panic would lose the final, but we got off to the perfect start, and all our bowlers bowled well - they didn’t bowl a loose ball.”

And O’Connor hopes this win can prove a launchpad be nice to do better in the league and Ramsbottom Cup, but this means it’s our best year for a while, to win some silverware.

“Sunday was make or break for club, and thankfully we won the cup, and the seconds reached the Lawrenson Cup Final as well by beating Ribblesdale Wanderers.”
