Great weekend for Burnley!

Burnley had a good weekend, with victory against struggling Colne at Turf Moor on Saturday followed by a narrow defeat in a thriller at Rawtenstall, leading to 17 points from a possible 24.

A sun-drenched weekend saw Colne the visitors to Turf Moor on Saturday, and they won the toss on a damp wicket, and, in good bowling conditions, inserted the home side.

Burnley laid the foundations of a formidable score with Qasim Ali (36) and Aidan Tate (30) taking the score to 58.

This brought to the crease professional Imad Wasim, who scored 76 and anchored the innings off 99 balls, and allowed some big hitting from Chris Burton (28) and captain Steve Brunt 21 as the innings closed on 232-9.

In response, Cole Hayman (2-9 off seven overs) and Graham Lalor (1-34) took the early wickets and put Burnley well in control.

This was confirmed when Brunt bowled former Burnley player Nathan Whitehead off his first ball in taking 3-27, and James Capstick ended with 3-16 as Colne were all out for 90 as the locals earned a huge 142-run victory.

On Sunday, Burnley travelled to Rawtenstall in good spirits and had a good start, reducing the hosts to 26-3, with Hayman once again impressing with 2-21, and Lalor also claiming a wicket.

It was only the home professional Nilantha Cooray, with a brisk 60, and some late order hitting which got them to a par score of 200, with Capstick taking another three wickets and Michael Kelly two.

In reply, Burnley got off to good start and were 97-2 when Ali was out for 65, having formed a good partnership with Tate.

But despite Wasim (40) and a hard-hitting 20 from Kelly and 12 from Brunt. Burnley needed 15 off the last two overs and nine off the last over.

But Capstick was run out trying to get Hayman on strike, who had earlier smashed 17 to nearly get Burnley over the line, and the locals ended five runs short.

Burnley travel to East Lancashire on Sunday.
