Downpour proves costly for Burnley

Friday night saw a win by 25 runs as Burnley scored 175 off their 20 overs, with Qasim Ali scoring a brilliant 84 off 55 balls, with professional Imad Wasim (19), Chris Burton (24), and late hitting from the Whitehead brothers, Josh and Gus, provided an imposing score.

In reply young Cole Hayman took the wicket of dangerman Matt Wilson, and a spell of 3-20 by Paul Mortimer left Colne 42-4.

It was only their pro, Mansoor Amjad who provided any resistance with 74, but late wickets from captain Steve Brunt (3-26) and Graham Lalor (2-22) left Colne all out for 150

On Sunday, however, in the league against Todmorden, rain interrupted and played a crucial role in curtailing a promising batting effort by Burnley and stopped them using the final seven overs, which provided an easy target for a in-form Todmorden.

There was confusion at the start when only one umpire turned up, and then discussions took place regarding who should officiate at square leg. Eventually play continued but Burnley lost three early wickets to leave them on 40-3, but Wasim and Brunt put together a partnership of 65, with Brunt scoring 44 and Wasim 48 not out.

The hosts were well placed to score in the region of 180 when the rain came and left an easier run chase for the visitors. After the game was further reduced to 27 overs, Todmorden eased to their target with only one wicket down.

Burnley have their first Twenty20 home game on Friday night at 6-15 p.m., followed by the away fixture at Accrington on Sunday.
