Double disappointment for Read

IT’S been a weekend to forget for Read CC.

The Station Road club lost ground on Barnoldswick at the Houldsworth Solicitors Ribblesdale Cricket League summit after suffering a 19-run defeat to Cherry Tree on Saturday, before crashing out of the Ramsbottom Cup at the hands of Settle on Sunday.

Saturday’s hosts set a competitive target at Preston Old Road, posting 187 runs and denying Read any bonus points after conceding nine wickets.

And in reply Kyle O’Connor’s title contenders mustered 168 runs before being wiped out.

O’Connor, intent on making an impression in the cup competitions this year, demanded a reaction at the Marshfield Ground the following day, but he would be left disappointed with the outcome.

After being bowled out for 172 in the first round of the Ramsbottom Cup, the competition they reached the final of last term, Read failed to keep Settle at bay as the home side crept past that total to register a two-wicket triumph.

However, there would be better fortune for John Bushell’s Padiham who earned their second league win of the campaign.

Professional Chris Holt continued his rich vein of form, scooping six wickets at the expense of 74 runs as Edenfield posted 184.

It was the paid man’s 19th wicket in just four league fixtures for the Arbories outfit.

And Anthony Hall helped his side climb past that total as his knock of 54 ensured a two-wicket victory.

But Padiham would suffer a similar fate to Read in the Ramsbottom Cup, as they were dumped out by holders Ribblesdale Wanderers.

Ian Britcliffe’s men posted a spectacular total of 281 and Padiham failed to peak that proverbial mountain, falling 87 runs short.
