Burnley endure difficult weekend

BURNLEY endured a dismal weekend as they suffered three defeats.

On Friday they lost to Nelson in the Twenty20 competition, before crashing out of the Worsley Cup at Haslingden on Saturday.

A league defeat at the hands of Nelson followed on Sunday.

In the cup, Haslingden earned a 111-run victory at Bentgate after the hosts put together the biggest total of the first round.

Captain Graham Knowles hit 60 as the home side reached 236-6.

Jack Taylor added (48), with Mr Extras the next top-score with 42, including 29 wides.

James Capstick took 3-54 for Burnley, with professional Imad Wasim chipping in with 2-51.

In reply, Burnleyt were all out for 125, including 43 from Qasim Ali.

The following day, Steve Brunt’s men lost narrowly by 20 runs in the league at Nelson.

The game was reduced to 32 overs a side at Seedhill, and Nelson made 150-4, with David Crotty top-scoring with an unbeaten 42 from 37 balls.

Openers Stuart Lemon (36) and Peter Dibb (27) also scored well, with Capstick again the pick of the bowlers with 3-38.

Nelson pro Luke Woodcock was the difference in reply as he took 6-49 as Burnley finished on 130-8.

Professional Imad Wasim made 39 and Brunt 23.

On Friday, in the first Twenty20 match of the season, Nelson won by 14 runs, again at Seedhill.

Richard Meade claimed 4-8 as Burnley were held to 86-9 in reply, after Nelson had totalled 100-7. Steve Brunt took 3-8.

This Sunday Burnley are at home to Todmorden.
