Burnley cricket star Jimmy Anderson’s family overjoyed at bid for borough honour

Following this newspaper’s campaign, a motion will be put to Burnley Borough Council asking that the sportsman known as the “Burnley Express” be recognised for his staggering performance Down Under.

His proud dad Michael said the family was overjoyed by the sentiment.

“Jimmy is aware of it and it is something he is very honoured by, without knowing exactly what the plans are. It’s a great gesture by the town and the whole family are extremely proud.”

The motion reads: “Burnley Borough Council wish to congratulate the England Test Cricket team with regards to their success in both retaining the Ashes and also winning the Test series in Australia.

“In doing so we wish the Executive or Member Structures Working Group, whichever is appropriate, to give consideration to giving some form of appropriate recognition to the major part played by James Anderson in the victory.

“James is a credit to the town and an excellent sporting role model for our young children.”

Coun. Andy Tatchell, who used to play cricket in the borough and was the former chairman of the Burnley and District Cricket League, said: “We have had a few good cricketers over the years from Burnley, but it is the first time someone has reached this level.

“Jimmy is not just a county cricketer, he is a national cricketer who is in the top two or three bowlers in the whole world and this needs recognition.

“He is someone who is a good role model for kids in Burnley and he is known as the ‘Burnley Express’ which identifies him with the town.

“The motion has been submitted and it will be in the next council agenda for all the councillors to vote on. I really hope it is voted through.

“If it is passed, Jimmy and his family will be invited to the town hall to ceive the honour.”
