Saturday saw Worsley Cup holders Burnley beat Lancashire League champions Lowerhouse to win the Ron Singleton Colne Trophy at My Protein Turf Moor.

Lowerhouse won the toss and elected to bat, and after a slow and steady start in the power play, the first wicket fell at 47 with Jonny Whitehead lbw to young quick bowler Tom Lawson.

Lowerhouse regrouped and made steady progress, reaching 122-2 at the halfway stage, with Joe Martin having departed for 40 to Cole Hayman

Skipper Charlie Cottam and professional Cobus Peinaar then produced a stand of 84, and at 164 the collapse began as Lawson got Pienaar caught behind.

Burnley professional Chris Holt picked up Cottam for 34, with another catch by Burton, in a spell of 1-28 off 10, and only Josh Lavin (13) made double figures as the West Enders finished on 206-9.

Burnley skipper Bharat Tripathi ended on 2-28 off 8 and Jhangir Liaqat 2-26 off 10.

In reply, Burnley tore into the Lowerhouse attack and were 90 before the first wicket fell in the 15th over.

Holt fell for 43 to Paddy Martin’s spin, but fellow opener Vishal Tripathi and Dan Pickup continued the control and were never in any trouble until, surprisingly, Tripathi was caught by Cottam off Tom Bridge for 66.

Pickup and Chris Burton saw the home side to victory with over nine overs to spare.

Pickup ended up on 65 not out and Burton 23 not out in a convincing victory ibn the traditional seasonal curtain-raiser.
