Burnley sign off fine campaign at champions

Burnley brought the curtain down on an impressive campaign with a 55-22 defeat at champions elect Trafford.

Trafford, unbeaten at home all season, required one point to secure the title in their own backyard.

Burnley trailed after only five minutes to a converted try, but hit back well as Gerhard Botha went over.

The home side then hit back with a try of their own in a tense encounter.

Then the turning point of the match came as Burnley lost a back row to the sin bin.

The home side needed no invitation as they ruthlessly exploited the extra space and man advantage, running in three tries, adding one conversion and a penalty to claim the title via a secured bonus point, allowing them to play with even more freedom.

Burnley rang the changes at the half, bringing on James White, Dave Lord and Joe Parkinson. It seemed to pay off as Botha, Adam Wallis then Simon Finnan went over.

A soft try kept Burnley at a distance, before the locals tired and the home side came back.

This, allied to some very average tackling and their attempts to run everything, gave Trafford further opportunities to extend their lead.

With rivals Tarleton winning, Burnley finished fourth in the Lancashire (North) table – a fine achievement having faced all the top sides in the last month and giving a good account of themselves, winning eighteen league matches, drawing one and losing six .Tomorrow the thirds finish their season at Carnforth, 3 p.m. kick-off

The junior section will be hosting their end of season awards night on Friday, May 6th at 6-45 p.m.
