Brilliant Brown smashes club record in Burnley win

Champions Burnley eased to a 112-run victory over Nelson at MyProtein Turf Moor, while Lowerhouse enjoyed a 40-run success at Colne.

For Burnley, David Brown recorded a new club record for limited overs matches as he hit a superb 162 not out, which included 18 fours and six sixes.

His sixth maximum hit saw him better Jon Clare’s 2006 knock of 161 against East Lancashire 10 years ago.

Captain Bharat Tripathi won the toss and chose to bat, with professional Chris Holt bowled by Richard Meade for five at 15.

That only brought Brown to the crease, however, and he and opener Vishal Tripathi put on 160 for the second wicket, before Tripathi fell to Nelson skipper Neil Thompson for a 90-ball 81, passing 500 runs for the season.

Brown then shared another century stand, ultimately worth 140, with Chris Burton, who hit 54 from 51 balls before he was out to Toqir Hussain at 315.

Brown closed on 160 not out off 145 balls, having reached 50 in 52, and 100 in 118 deliveries, as Burnley posted a total of 321-3 – matching their highest in league matches set in 2010 at Bacup.

In reply, Nelson lost Billy Jamil without scoring, with the score on three, trapped by Jhangir Liaqat.

Lewis Bradley (29) and paid man Ryan Bailey (29) put together the best stand of Nelson’s innings, worth 52, for the second wicket, and wickets continued to fall at regular intervals thereafters.

Thompson top scored with 54 as his side were dismissed for 209 in the 48th over, hjacing shared 50 for the final wicket with Sam Halstead (26 not out).

David Crotty added 26 and Harrison Phelan 15, a Bharat Tripathi took 3-29, Tom Lawson 2-43, Holt 2-61 and Cole Hayman 2-44.

Burnley sit second in the table, four points behind Ramsbottom.

Lowerhouse are a further four points adrift of the leaders, after their win at the Horsfield, where Jon Finch was man of the match, hitting 82 from 99 balls, including 15 fours, before taking 4-65 off 17 overs.

Captain Charlie Cottam won the toss and decided to bat, but the West Enders lost Joe Martin for three with the score on 27, to John Lambert.

Opener Finch and Ben Heap put on 119 for the second wicket, with Heap making 74 from 108 balls, including with six fours and two sixes.

Cottam added an unbeaten 20, Joe Hawke 16 and Chris Bleazard 14 as Lowerhouse closed on 230-6.

Colne made a decent fist of their response, despire losing Chris Walton for four at 12, bowled by Joe Halstead.

Sam Tillotson anchored the innings with his 81-ball 57, including six fours and a six, while professional professional Yaseen Vallie added 22 and Tom Bradshaw 15.

Colne were in trouble at 132-8, but Danny Kegg (35 not out) and John Lambert (14) put on 44 for the ninth wicket, the best partnership of the reply.

However, Colne were all out for 190 as Paddy Martin took 4-40 to add to Finch’s 4-65.

In the 20/20 competition on Friday night, Lowerhouse were beaten at home to Rishton with a ball to spare.

Rishton won the toss and put Lowerhouse in to bat, and the hosts made 148-4 as professional Dieter Klein (41), Ben Heap (31), Joe Hawke (25 not out), skipper Charlie Cottam (17 not out) and Joe Halstead (13) all chipped in.

Rishton captain Matt Lambert took 3-33.

In reply, professional Shaun Von Berg hit 10 fours in his 56, sharing 74 with Mo Patel (33) before falling to Paddy Martin (2-18) at 130, and Heap (4-34) took three wickets with the score at 140, before Matt Leathert hit a six and a four to see Rishton home.
