Singleton eyeing lucrative title shot in 2015 after latest victory

The latest fighter to join such esteemed company? Shayne Singleton. The 25-year-old took his record to 19-0-0 after stopping Georgian Nodar Robakidze in the penultimate stanza of their eight-round contest at Manchester’s Victoria Warehouse.

And with former WBO World cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson in attendance, it seems a matter of time until Singleton will be joining ‘The Entertainer’ and co-host Adam Smith on Ringside.

“It’s great; there’s some big names down that list,” said Singleton. “My name is starting to get about and I just need that chance. Winning in November would take my record to 20-0-0. I was chuffed to be included alongside some top drawer fighters. I’m being taken seriously now after being kept under the radar.”

The prolific welterweight’s latest triumph was routine but executed in clinical fashion, dispatching his opponent with 11 seconds remaining in the seventh round.

Singleton, backed by a tremendously raucous crowd, dictated with ease from the first amicable touch of the glove, commanding the centre of the ring and working off his staunch left jab.

With the recently crowned British Masters Silver champion unexposed, Singleton began to restrict the space before bruising his opponent’s torso with a barrage of crushing body shots.

Sensing the stoppage, backed with uncharacteristic cries of attack from coach Karl Ince, Singleton upped the ante. Singleton stalked his prey relentlessly and imprisoned Robakidze in the ring’s perimeter. At this stage the tourist resembled a heavily marked rag doll. There was no escape - until Lyson intervened.

“I caught him with some cracking body shots,” said Singleton. “I sickened him and his elbows went in tight but he stuck in,” he said. “His face looked a mess. He took a lot of punishment. I showed againI can step on and apply the pressure.”

Singleton will now fight at Blackburn King George’s Hall on November 22nd in hope of pushing himself into contention for a title shot in 2015. “I’ve kept busy over the last few months because it looks like there’ll be a big fight at the start of next year. If Frankie Gavin beats Bradley Skeete and vacates the belts then that could set things up for me and Sam Eggington.

“I’d get in there with any of them though.”
