It's a clean sweep for Sandygate on 50th anniversary

Opening the show was Stoops Estates’ Archie McIvor (10) in a skills bout against K.McDonough (Ardwick ABC) which was a cracking little contest with the home boxer dominating.

Archie McDonough (10) faced J.McDonough (Ardwick ABC) in another bout of skill and once again it was the Burnley boxer controlling all three rounds, especially the final minute.

Paudie Creighton (12) had a skills rematch with K.Heaton (Murray Machines ABC) with the Unity pupil in complete control.

Fellow Unity Year eight pupil Callum Halstead (12) finalised the evening’s skills contests against J.Halstead (Ardwick ABC) and impressed the crowds.

Cliviger’s Troy Richmond (12) started the competitive contests against Yorkshire Schoolboy champion T.Pedder (Sedburgh ABC), and the youngster got the evening off to a winning start.

Sandygate’s North West Junior champion Hasan Khan (14) was up next against Manchester’s B.Donald (North Side ABC) and he took all three rounds courtesy of an unrelenting barrage of body shots.

Stoops boxer Zak Ralph (13) was matched against Rawtenstal’s N.May (Love ABC) hoping to keep the clubs winning streak in tact and he was not going to disappoint.

The talented teenager put on a dazzling display, while weathering a second round storm, to take a majority verdict.

Unbeaten Sulayman Khan (14) had a re-match with A.Pettifer (Murray Machines ABC) and it was the Prairie puncher who capitalised on his height and strength advantage to secure another unanimous decision.

The contest between Jaden Haworth-Franklin (15) and A.Young (Littleborogh ABC) was a real crowd pleaser as both young boxers gave every inch of energy but it was Sandygate’s unbeaten run that was stretched.

Sandygate’s Michael Wood (16) was pitted against unbeaten Cumbrian J.Hodgson (Border City ABC) at 65kg in what was to be the contest of the evening.

Wood’s strength and dominance was evident straight from the opening bell, connecting well off the jab and he earned the nod for the opener.

The second saw the teenager’s power come to the fore as a vicious cocktail of punches at the end of the second forced the man-in-the-middle to step in and administer a standing eight count to the visitor before the bell saved his foe from any further punishment.

The third and final round saw the impressive Sandygate boxer go out for the stoppage and it finally came after Hodgson had initially survived another eight count.

Unity’s Year 11 head boy Sam Walsh (16) closed the show against another Cumbrian in D.Turnbull (Border City ABC) hoping to provide the perfect conclusion.

And he didn’t disappoint with a measured, mature and composed performance, controlling the ring and connecting frequently to notch the final win of the event and secure a fitting end to the club;s anniversary celebrations.
