Finals tilt for local fighters

TWO amateur fighters from Roche’s Boxing Club in Burnley are vying to become king of the ring.

Teenage prodigies George Drinkwater and Sean Hughes have advanced to the North West regional finals of the Schoolboy Championships in their respective weight divisions, and will be looking to bring home the title on Saturday.

The duo will feature at Cedar Mount in Gorton, Manchester, with George going fist-to-fist with Northside ABC’s Ryan Walsh while Sean will be looking to send Bridgewater’s Keiron Moore spiralling to the canvas.

George defeated in-form Adam Ridge (Leigh) by way of unanimous decision in the semi-final over 3x2 minute rounds.

Coach Brian Roche said: “He fought absolutely superb. He’s as fit as a fiddle and as strong as an ox.

“The lad he was boxing is a good fighter, has been hugely tipped and was expected to win.

“But George is a good puncher and has a cracking chance of winning it now.

“It will take some special to beat him now.”
