Burnley boxers enjoy second fight victories

THE sky’s the limit for two of Roche Amateur Boxing Club’s rising stars.

Burnley fighters Owen Thomas and Adil Hussain followed up their debut victories with further success at the weekend.

Thomas fought Fox ABC’s unbeaten prospect Terry Byker in a light-middleweight contest and went on to devastate his Manchester-based opponent. The 22-year-old sent Byker tumbling to the canvas in the second round.

“He had a great first round and went on from there,” said coach Brian Roche. “He brought his opponent on to his shot and it was a lethal right hand. First he feinted with his right hand, then connected with a left hook which was followed up with a cracking right. It was a beautiful combination.”

Roche added: “He’s a nice boxer and he can really punch. I think he’s going to take some beating.”

Hussain faced M. Kassim of Irlam ABC in another 69kg category contest at Eccles Leisure Centre, Salford. The 21-year-old was awarded his second victory in the amateur ranks with a unanimous verdict from the ringside judges.

Roche, recently awarded East Lancashire Coach of the Year at a ceremony held at Mytton Fold, said: It was a classy performance from Adil. He put him down in the second round and the referee gave Kassim a standing count. He boxed his head off and deservedly won the boxer of the night accolade. Both fighters are on a role.”
