Consistent Sophie earns win for England at Loughborough

Sophie Hitchon was again in consistent form with the hammer to win for England at the annual Loughborough International Athletics match on Sunday.

Competing at the Paula Radcliffe Stadium, Sophie threw 70.52m to head the field at the 55th hosting of the historic meet.

Sophie has comfortably broken the selection criteria for next summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with the A standard in the women’s hammer set at 66.50m.

The qualifying period began on New Year’s Day, running until June 1st next year.

At the end of April, the British record holder and Olympic finalist - 21 in July - broke stadium records at two meets in California, throwing 69.67 in Berkeley, and 70.53m in Stanford.

The former Thomas Whitham Sixth Form student began her 2013 season in March, with a best throw of 70.34m at the British Athletics Winter Throws Trials in Loughborough, before, in her first international appearance of the year, claiming a top 10 finish in Castellon, Spain, at the European Cup Winter Throwing, with best of 66.69m.

Next up for Sophie, this weekend, is the 39th edition of the Werfertage Halle meet in Germany, when more than 500 throwers from 30 nations do battle in a European throwsfest.
