The Welshman, enjoying the most successful season of his career with 15 goals to date, believes the squad should be ready to back its ability in the race for the Premier League.

The Clarets have taken 12 points from the six fixtures played against the clubs currently occupying the play-off places, and the 24-year-old striker was further enthused by the latest point in the 3-3 draw against QPR at Loftus Road.

“We haven’t mentioned the word promotion this year,” he said. “But it’s something that we need to get our heads around and keep pushing. It seems like it’s going to go all the way.

“There are 18 more games and everything to play for so we need to keep putting the pressure on. QPR are three points ahead of us at the moment but I’m sure there will be a lot of twists and turns.”

Vokes added: “QPR are a strong side and have massive resources so for us to go there and give them that sort of game is great for us. We went there without fear, like we’ve done all season, and the confidence we’ll take from a performance like that will be huge.”

Meanwhile, Vokes is flourishing in his role alongside leading scorer Danny Ings with the pair clocking up 37 goals in all competitions between them.

And he believes that the club’s strikers’ union has been strengthened further with the addition of Brighton forward Ashley Barnes.

“We just have to keep plugging away, that’s what we’re all about and hopefully we can chip in with a few more,” he said.

“We’re opposite kinds of players but we work well together, we work on things in training, runs and how you play together.

“Every game as a striker you want to go out and get the opportunity to score goals and if we can do that it’s a good thing for strikers.

“Ingsy and myself have worked hard and have got our rewards, but we’ve got a great team behind us creating chances.”

He added: “It’s always good to have competition in the squad, including for myself and Ingsy.

“Ash is a great addition to the squad and if he can come in and chip in that will be great.”
