Youth MP Joseph to speak in House of Commons

Starting as a member of the Youth Council at The Zone, Burnley, Joseph, from the Queens Park Road area of Burnley, was elected to represent Burnley as the borough’s only Member of Youth Parliament in the recent Youth Parliament Election.

Joseph will be the first Member of Youth Parliament for Burnley to speak in the House of Commons. This amazing opportunity will take place on November 1st as part of the Youth Parliament Takeover and will be broadcast on the BBC.

Voted for by Youth Council members of his own age, Joseph was elected on the basis of his commitment to tackling the issues related to the Youth Parliament’s two main campaigns for 2016: Race and Discrimination and Mental Health.

Joseph said: “I have always pursued the goal of making life for young people in Burnley as great as possible and as a member of the Student Council at Burnley College Sixth Form Centre I am able to share the views of my fellow students amongst the whole College to help further enhance the student experience,” says Joseph in his statement to Youth Parliament.

“I simply wish to make the life of every young person in Burnley better and believe I am hardworking and dedicated enough to represent us all during my time as Member of Youth Parliament for Burnley.”

Joseph will now be meeting fellow members of Youth Parliament at Youthforia regional meetings and plans to spend his summer completing valuable work experience in Julie Cooper MP’s offices, carrying out research with her current team.

Joseph says of his election as Member of Youth Parliament for Burnley:

“I’m extremely proud and grateful that the Youth Council and their esteemed guests chose to elect me to this privileged position. Tackling the Youth Parliament’s campaigns throughout the year will be a fantastic opportunity to meet issues that affect young people head on and I’m looking forward to representing them in Westminster later this year. The support I’ve received from my tutors in pursuing my dreams to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics in University before gaining a career in Politics has been instrumental in my achievements.”

Head of Burnley College Sixth Form Centre A Levels Angela Donovan said: “We are all very proud of Joseph, who has mapped out his career plans and gone out there and achieved some amazing opportunities for himself with our support and support from the Youth Council. I’m especially looking forward to seeing him represent the young people of Burnley in the Houses of Parliament in November where I’m sure he will make a big difference.”
