THE Mayoress, Joan Heginbotham, and I wish to extend to everyone their appreciation and thanks for supporting them at their Civic Service in St John the Evangelist Church, Worsthorne.

The uniformed groups – the ATC and Sea Cadets – were, as usual, exemplary in their roles as escorts and guards of honour. The church groups – Beavers, Cubs, Guides and Scouts – with their banners, were perfect representatives of our church’s youth organisations. The British Legion, with their Standards, were impeccable in their true regimental tradition.

The church organ master, Martin, the choir and the soloists, Lauren and Carol, were magnificent in leading us all in singing the hymns, and Fr Keith Henshall’s wonderful sermon was delivered in his usual delightful manner.

We also want to thank all the back-room men and boys of St John the Evangelist for their most valued help, and the Mayor’s officers for their highly qualified roles superintending and overseeing the parade.

And, of course, we must thank the ladies of both churches who teamed together and worked so hard to prepare the lovely scrumptious cakes, teas and coffee. Ladies, as usual you are always there when needed and you did us proud. What would we do without you.

Finally, we thank all friends and families with their little children who had travelled from far and wide to rejoice with us on this wonderful occasion, and each and everyone who supported Joan and I on this most memorable civic service on the feast of Pentecost.
