The male driver of the other car was from Burnley and believed to be in his sixties. He was not injured.

Fire crews from Nelson and Burnley were called to the scene and were first there, assisting the victims and controlling traffic. Watch Manager Tom Simpson from Nelson Fire Station explained they were called because of smoke from the airbags. He said: “The people were out of the cars when we got there.”

Both vehicles were badly damaged in the crash, however.
