The woman, named as Diane Bottomley, from Crawshawbooth, sustained head injuries and was taken for treatment at the Royal Preston Hospital where she died later that day.

Officers are now keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the vicinity at the time of the accident and saw what happened.

Sgt Sean Cunningham, from the Road Policing Unit, said: “This is a tragic accident and my thoughts remain with the family and friends of Diane at this difficult time. We are trying to establish exactly how this accident came about and I would appeal to anybody with any information to get in touch.

“We believe there may have been a dark-coloured saloon car passing the scene at the time of the accident and the occupants may have seen what happened in the bus layby. I would urge the driver of this car to come forward as they may have valuable information about what happened.”

Anyone with information can contact police on 101 quoting log 324 of 27th October.
